Green Lane Burial Field

Management Plan

The field of 11 acres (4.45Ha) is undulating grassland and once carried a mix of beef cows and sheep. Half the field has steeply wooded slopes where bluebells and wood anemones flourish in the spring.

Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust Logo A recent habitat audit by Clive Faulkner, Conservation Officer with the Wildlife Trust showed the presence of over 70 plant species. The woodland is mainly mixed oak and ash, with some cherry, rowan and hazel and has small areas of gorse, bracken and bramble.

The grassland is currently less diverse and here we are making improvements.

Forestry Logo In co-operation with the Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust and the Forestry Commission we have devised a strategy which will regenerate and increase the woodland and reduce the fertility of the grassland to allow a wildflower meadow to flourish.

The woodlands nearby green burial field     In January 2004 we planted some 3,000 trees and shrubs - mainly local oak, but with ash, hazel, cherry and other species to provide interest and diversity.
We have an ongoing program of woodland management, including replacing any young trees that fail, controlling weeds, creating paths and erecting information boards.

Green Burial Field meadow  Since October 2003 all livestock were excluded. A crop of grass is harvested at regular intervals to reduce fertility and to manage the grass growth.
As fertility declines, a diversity of native meadow seeds will be introduced from the Trust's own nature reserves. A Hay crop is harvested annually in July to allow seeds to set and birds to nest. Already we are beginning to see natural meadow grasses & flowers begin to flourish, including yellow rattle & yarrow.
